A 32-YEAR-OLD man has been jailed for evading almost £25,000 worth of duty on tobacco and cigarettes during a one year period.
Aaran Howard Eastwood was sentenced to 15 months in prison for nine counts of fraudulently evading £24,650 of duty on 37kgs of rolling tobacco and 11,200 cigarettes between October 2020 and October 2021.
He was found to have made £95,320 from criminal offences, which was ordered to be confiscated, and was also jailed for importing a small quantity of diazepam tables – which are a class C drug.
His co-accused Antonio Paulino De Andrade (60) from Madeira was fined £6,000 for knowingly acquiring tobacco goods over the same period.
Paul Le Monnier, senior manager at Jersey Customs and Immigration Service, said: ‘Eastwood evaded duty of nearly £25,000 over a period of one year by smuggling cigarettes and tobacco into Jersey. The tobacco goods were then supplied to his co-accused who was selling them locally for profit.’
