A MOTORIST who drove while over twice the legal drink-drive limit has been ordered to carry out community service and banned from driving for 20 months.

Paul Samuel McAllister (36) was caught driving erratically along Mont Cochon at 1.30am on 1 October by an off-duty police officer, the Magistrate’s Court heard.

St Helier Centenier Paul Huelin told the court that McAllister’s car had been seen crossing the road’s central white lines and did not have its headlights on.

He failed a roadside breath test and gave a urine sample at the police station. It showed 234 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of liquid – more than twice the legal maximum of 107 milligrams. Advocate John Borg, defending, said McAllister had parked his car in Sand Street car park that evening and had intended to walk home, but later decided to drive.

The lawyer said that his client accepted that the offence ‘crosses the custody threshold’ but added: ‘This is his first appearance in the Magistrate’s Court. He pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity and he has been fully compliant.’

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu banned McAllister from driving for 20 months and sentenced him to 90 hours’ community service.
