SCAMMERS taking advantage of the Pier Road tragedy are asking for donations claiming to be for those impacted by the explosion.

NatWest International has said they are aware of scam calls being made to Islanders pretending to be from a local bank.

The bank warned: ‘The callers are asking for donations to be made to support those impacted. Scammers can be more active after such events, so please remain vigilant.’

NatWest said it would never make a call such as this, and urged victims of such scams to contact the bank.

Barclays has also sent a text message to customers warning that fraudsters are taking advantage of the tragedy, while the government has issued a reminder to Islanders to ‘stay vigilant’ for fraud following recent incidents.

Islanders have taken to social media to express their disgust that scammers are taking advantage of the tragedy in which many have lost their lives, while Consumer Council chair Carl Walker described it as ‘obscene and vile that scammers would stoop so low as to take advantage of these tragedies’.

‘It just goes to show the complete lack of morals and conscience that scammers have,’ he said.

Mr Walker added: ‘I hope Islanders can see right though these scams as, unfortunately, they’re used to them now.

‘People should ensure that they donate through the official channels.’
