SPECIALIST teams have arrived in Jersey from the UK to help in the search at the scene of a gas explosion in Pier Road.

One person has died, two were injured and an estimated 12 more are missing after the three-storey block of flats collapsed.

In a statement on Saturday afternoon, the States police said: ‘As the search at Haut du Mont [flats] has progressed, pockets of fire have been discovered.

‘The site remains highly unsafe. Our emergency services have been joined by the South West Hazardous Area Response Team and will shortly be joined by an Urban Search and Rescue Team from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service.

‘They will be bringing specialist skills to assist with the site search.’
