A MAN who smashed the door of an off-licence and headbutted a police officer has been jailed for five months after he told an assistant magistrate: ‘Please just sentence me now.’

The Magistrate’s Court heard yesterday that Robert Kevin Passman (31) and another man had been outside the Wine Warehouse in Five Oaks at 3am on 21 July.

Advocate Jordan Gollop, prosecuting, said the pair returned 15 minutes later and Passman picked up a bin and threw it at the door.

The lawyer said: ‘Entry wasn’t gained but the glass was smashed.’

The two men then ran off, the court heard. The States police were able to identify Passman by his clothes and his fingerprints on the bin.

Advocate Gollop continued: ‘Mr Passman said he had no intention of breaking and entering.

‘He disregarded all the evidence that showed he had been there and had thrown the bin. He denied being in the area at the time.’

Then, on the evening of 7 October, Passman was found by police asleep in Parade Road.

Advocate Gollop told the court: ‘Mr Passman was emotional and in an intoxicated state. When they tried to help him up he headbutted an officer.’

Advocate Chris Baglin, defending, told the court that Passman, who pleaded guilty to both charges, had had a difficult upbringing and led a ‘chaotic’ lifestyle.

Describing his client’s offences, the lawyer said: ‘They are, in my respectful submission, at the lower end of this type of offending.’

He added: ‘His lifestyle has been very chaotic and he found solace in alcohol. But this is a man who, despite his difficulties, can put himself on the straight and narrow.’

However, Passman, who appeared via video link, said: ‘Please just sentence me now.’

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris agreed that the crimes were ‘lesser examples of each offence’.

He sentenced Passman to two months’ imprisonment for attempted breaking-and-entering and three months for assaulting a police officer. He will serve the sentences consecutively.
