A NEW map has been published showing the location of the 160 Asian hornet nests found in Jersey so far this year.
Volunteer groups have dealt with a huge explosion in the number of both primary and secondary nests during 2020.
The map, posted online by volunteer hunter John de Carteret, shows the location of both small primary nests (PN) and the much larger secondary nests (SN).
The vast majority of nests have been found in the east of the Island. It is likely that many of these were started by hornets which had flown in from France.
However, some nests have been discovered much further west, including in St Brelade.
Recently the volunteer team found a massive nest containing more than 1,600 hornets near the Waitrose in Vallée des Vaux – and some of the insects were still alive after spending more than 24 hours in the freezer.
In recent weeks, another nest was found near L’Etacquerel Fort on the north coast, and another was found in the toilets at the former Tamba Park activity centre.
