CUTTING fuel duty is a ‘blunt tool’ for tackling the cost-of-living crisis, according to the Environment Minister.

Deputy Jonathan Renouf made the comments yesterday during an in-committee debate – which does not include a vote – that was prompted by an online petition garnering more than 5,000 signatures.

The online petition, lodged by ATF Fuels director Jonathan Best earlier this year, called on the government to cut 2.5p per litre from fuel.

Deputy Renouf said: ‘The problem with the cut in fuel duty is that it is a blunt tool if the aim is to tackle the cost of living.’

On the impact of any potential cut in road-fuel duty, Deputy Renouf added: ‘It doesn’t target the people who need it. The amount [of money] involved is tiny for a typical road user.’

The petition stated: ‘The international fuel situation has changed dramatically following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, which has led to a further rise of driven fuel prices.

‘Some of the highest prices in decades. Consumers are faced with a cost-of-living crisis on many fronts, not limited to but including fuel.’

The Government Plan will freeze fuel duty, if it is approved in December.
