A FESTIVAL marking the anniversary of the Jersey corn riots starts later this week.

Events commemorating La Folle d’Avoût – a Jèrriais phrase which means ‘the wild spirit of harvest’ – will include the return of both Norman and local craft markets as well as several stages of musical entertainment and other activities.

The festival was introduced for the first time last year to mark the 250th anniversary of major legislative reform, introduced two years after disgruntled citizens from the northern parishes stormed the Royal Court in 1769.

The protests – referred to as the corn riots – took place due to the price of wheat, caused by a combination of shortages and unfair taxes.
