Official opening for surf therapy centre

The new Healing Waves Surf Therapy Centre (34322147)

AN inclusive disability surf centre run by an ocean-therapy charity will officially open its doors on Saturday.

The project has been undertaken by Healing Waves,

which offers disabled Islanders the chance to enjoy the

sea through a variety of adapted water

sports.

The centre, which has been constructed next to Le Braye car park, was made possible by a £411,000 contribution from the government’s Fiscal Stimulus Fund.

It will be a permanent base for the charity and its athletes, provide storage space for its adapted surf equipment and disabled changing facilities for its members and the public.

Two of the charity’s founders, Max Wiltshire and Dominic Booth, have been operating from the centre since July as part of a soft launch. They are now planning to hold an official opening on 1 October at 3pm.

In a Facebook post, they wrote: ‘We are going to formally open the doors and welcome any of our athletes, families, stakeholders and supporters who would like to come down and have a look around.

‘The centre is set to serve as a beacon of hope for equality, inclusion and acceptance in Jersey and we are beyond proud to have made this happen in such a short space of time.’

They added: ‘This huge feat, of course, wouldn’t have been at all possible without our wonderful community of Jersey coming together to help in the design, funding and build of our surf-therapy centre.

‘We will be eternally grateful to all those involved, who have supported us to keep sharing the stoke and spreading the aloha spirit here in Jersey.’
