A PIECE worth over £55,000 by street artist Banksy is among the artworks that are on show at the Private & Public Gallery this month.
Any Islander with £56,000 to spare will be able to buy ‘Bomb Hugger’, a 2003 screen print by the mysterious street artist whose work has appeared on buildings across the globe and sold for millions at auction.
Having started in Bristol’s underground graffiti scene, the artist’s work developed to include bold political and social statements. In 2018 at an auction held at Sotheby’s one of his bestknown pieces – Girl With Balloon – was sold for £1 million.
After the hammer came down the image, which was on display at the time, dropped into a shredder built into the picture’s frame. The partially damaged artwork was resold last year, fetching £18 million – vastly more than the £4m-£6m guide price.
Work by other renowned artists such as Jeff Koons – known for his giant stainless steel balloon animals and Monkey Train – are also on show at the gallery.
