PLANS have been lodged to demolish the ‘weathered and dated’ Lifeboat Café at the Harbour and replace it with a new kiosk.
Under the proposals, submitted by MAC Architectural Services, the new café would be a ‘temporary structure’ with ‘improved seating and awnings’.
In the application, the firm said that the development would have ‘no impact’ on the historical character of the Albert Pier, which is a grade-two listed structure.
MAC Architectural Services added: ‘It is our opinion that the existing structure offers little architectural merit, looks weathered and dated.
‘Also at present the café is a permanent structure, as opposed to a temporary structure that is proposed.’
It continued: ‘We argue that this is a significant improvement to the historic and listed Albert Pier.
‘The pier is a working pier and this structure is an improvement in design and functionality to what is on site at present.
‘The proposed canopies are removable and we feel will not have an effect on the site and will in turn improve the al fresco area of the café.’
