NEIGHBOURS prevented a wildfire from spreading to their properties after tackling it with garden hoses.

Firefighters were called out at about 8pm on Thursday following reports that a large land fire in St Ouen was spreading towards homes.

Three engines and a water carrier were sent to the scene.

On arrival, crews were faced with a fire covering about 1,000 sq m of vegetation.

The service say that neighbours who doused the blaze with domestic hoses prevented the incident from escalating.

The fire was quickly brought under control and crews remained on scene damping down until 10.30pm.

In a Facebook post, Jersey Fire and Rescue said: ‘We would like to remind the public that this sustained period of dry weather means the likelihood of an open land fire is dramatically increased.

‘The lighting of fires should be avoided and always consider the possibility of the fire spreading.’
