A NEW cohort of doctors has started a two-year training programme at the Hospital.

Once their course is completed, the 18 foundation doctors – who come from several countries including Ireland, Jordan and Australia – will either return to the UK for speciality training or remain employed within Health and Community Services.

Medical education and centre manager Oliver Leeming said the foundation programme aimed to develop competence around basic clinical skills and management of acutely ill patients, as well as other skills such as teamwork and communication.

‘We are welcoming these doctors, working in partnership with Health Education Wessex and their foundation school, which is the deanery we are attached to. We are passionate about providing good-quality medical education and training in a supportive environment,’ he said.

One of the doctors, 27-year-old Ankit Das from Brisbane, said: ‘It’s my first time on the Island. I decided to come here because I heard good things about Jersey from friends and colleagues. I have made some friends and I’m looking forward to going exploring in the countryside. So far I have undertaken one day of training in life support.’
