New nurses secure jobs at the Hospital

Student nurses and a midwife have finished their studies this week and have taken on roles at the Hospital

TWELVE new locally trained nurses and a midwife will be joining the health care ranks in the Island after successfully completing their course work.

All have taken on roles within the Hospital and celebrated their final day of lessons this week after beginning their studies in September 2019.

‘This group of students have had a very different experience during their programme, as Covid meant that the majority of their first year was undertaken via online classes and when they came back into practice they were straight into the wards,’ said Dr Hazel McWhinnie, head of nursing, midwifery and allied health professional education.

‘They have shown amazing resilience and flexibility and I’m so pleased to see they have all secured jobs.’

Chief nurse Rose Naylor said the education programme was essential to health care workforce sustainability.

‘I am really proud of the programmes that we are able to offer,’ she added.

The group celebrated with a tea party and members are said to be keen to get to work.

‘I’m really looking forward to looking after my patients,’ said Marion McFarlane (42), who will join Corbière Ward. ‘I’ve always wanted to be a nurse but I never thought I would get the opportunity to study to become one.

‘I’ve loved the course and the fact that I got to study on-Island. I’m a single mum, so I wouldn’t have been able to have done the course otherwise.’

Also graduating were: Nicky Logan, Della Miri, Melissa Picot, Shannon Cork, Chloë De La Cloche, Jessica Remesso, Lorraine Murray, Mara De Oliveira, Candace Benest, Lauren McShane and Lauren Ellis.
