JERSEY’S top sportsmen and women were at the forefront of celebrations in Birmingham as the 22nd Commonwealth Games began with a stunning opening ceremony.
Over 20 Caesarean athletes and officials paraded in front of 30,000 spectators at Alexander Stadium after organisers had put on a stellar show dedicated to the city’s culture and history, including music and dynamic theatrical performances.
The arrival of competitors from 72 nations – introduced by the likes of comedians Lenny Henry and Joe Lycett – was followed by the arrival of the Games baton and a performance by homegrown band Duran Duran.
The vast majority of Jersey’s athletes opted to watch the ceremony from the comfort of the Games Villages as they prepare for action in and around Birmingham – starting on Friday morning with gymnastics, bowls, triathlon and swimming.
