JERSEY Ambulance Service has launched its ‘community first responders’ scheme, after it called for Islanders to take on the role to help out in emergencies.

The nationally approved scheme, which relies on volunteers, has been introduced with the aim of providing emergency care before the arrival of an ambulance. This fast response can save lives in serious emergencies, such as a suspected heart attack, where it is vital to act quickly, said those behind the scheme.

The community first responders have received full training and started their roles this week. One of the responders, Rebecca Reddy, said: ‘We’ve received thorough training and sat exams to get us to the right standard to provide emergency care. I hope that if and when the time comes, I am able to make a positive difference to someone in their hour of need.’

Islanders show their availability by logging on to the GoodSam app which alerts volunteers to the location of emergencies.

Senior paramedic Jason Hamon said the scheme was a ‘nationally recognised and utilised initiative’ and had ‘been proven to make all the difference in emergency situations’.

He continued: ‘The purpose of community first responders is to ensure help gets to the most needy, as quickly as possible. The Jersey Ambulance Service is incredibly grateful to all those who have stepped up to become community first responders.’
