FIRE crews were called out to a kitchen fire on the first floor of a property in St Clement yesterday evening, caused after a hob was accidentally turned on which had clothes on top.

Two fire appliances responded to the incident, with crews met by smoke coming out of the first floor window on arrival, as two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the building and quickly extinguished the blaze.

The owner was alerted to the fire by their smoke alarm and evacuated the property, with the fire service highlighting the importance of having a working alarm and commending the occupants for swiftly evacuating the property and calling 999.

The fire service also reminded Islanders to avoid placing items on a hob when not in use, ‘as controls can be inadvertently switched on’.

‘We also recommend, if possible, isolating the power to your hob when not in use,’ they added.
