TWO family fun events are due to be held tomorrow to mark Children’s Day.

A get-together in Millbrook Park between 9.30am and noon for families with young children, and live music from Jersey Youth Arts in Howard Davis Park between 2 and 6pm.

Entertainers, sports clubs and children’s charities are all also being invited to take part.

The sites were selected following a government survey that looked at how children and young people wanted to celebrate Children’s Day.

The events emerged from a recommendation made by a citizens’ panel created in the wake of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry – mainly comprising abuse survivors – that an annual day to remember the failures of the care system as well as to celebrate children’s rights be established.

Cheyenne O’ Connor, of the Independent Survivors’ Steering Group, which helped develop the plan for the day, said: ‘The steering group is really happy to be involved in Children’s Day this year.

‘It’s great that such a big event is being organised to celebrate children in the Island and that the recommendations of the citizens’ panel are continuing.’

Tomorrow – 3 July – was selected as it marks the date in 2017 when the inquiry panel released its report which documented decades of abuse in the Island’s care system.

In the run-up to Children’s Day, pupils at every school in the Island were asked to create a triangular design marking the event, with each point representing the child, their home and their community.

They will be joined together to create large totem sculptures representing each school, and will form part of an exhibition at the Children’s Day events.

Jersey Heritage is also offering free entry to children at all of its sites tomorrow.
