JERSEY has been exporting its celebrated potatoes for decades and Channel Islander Beverley Mackay has long been buying them…
But the 75-year-old Guernseywoman got a surprise when she took home her latest bag from Waitrose – and found the growers had inadvertently included a golf ball.
‘To my absolute amazement, I took out four potatoes and there was this golf ball,’ Mrs Mackay said. ‘I couldn’t believe my own eyes.’
The ball had the words K&A Golf Centre Jersey printed on it in faint letters, and Mrs Mackay said she believed it was a training ball which ended up in a potato field before accidentally being picked up at harvest time.
Mrs Mackay said: ‘You hear about spiders in bananas – but this was a bit different.’
She added: ‘If I had been blind I might have cooked it.’
The supermarket gave Mrs Mackay her money back and a bunch of flowers by way of apology, and have promised to carry out an investigation.
But the islander saw the funny side and said: ‘It was just a one-off. It’s caused a lot of amusement.’
