PUPILS at a newly-built secondary school are wearing their PE kit as a result of sweltering temperatures forecast to reach 33°C by the end of the week.
Headteacher Sarah Hague of Les Quennevais School criticised the ‘unacceptable’ situation which have meant that the new school, which opened in September 2020, had no working air conditioning.
In a letter to parents, Mrs Hague said that school PE kit could be worn today and tomorrow, and recommended all children brought water bottles which could be refilled.
Installation of new equipment, originally set to be carried out during the Easter holiday in April, was now set to take place during the summer holiday, Mrs Hague added. She admitted that this left several weeks of term without any means of mitigating against high temperatures, and that installation of temporary air cooling systems in worst affected areas was not yet complete.
Mrs Hague referred to ‘a disappointing and frustrating situation to manage’ and apologised for the difficulty caused.
The JEP has asked the government about the reasons for the problem, and what is being done.
