Hole causes road closure in St Brelade

MONT Les Vaux in St Brelade has been closed between La Rue de Crocquet and Le Chemin des Pietons due to a hole in the road.

The closure is so the government’s roads team can investigate and repair the depression, which is around 30cm-deep – although it is unknown how long the work will take.

More holes – known as voids – have been discovered about half a metre below the surface of the road.

The government has said the voids were ‘not apparent’ during the site’s recent resurfacing, but it is suspected that the vibration from the work affected the crust above them – and the subsequent traffic caused the crust to fall into the hole.

Voids at similar depths below the road are generally caused by the passage of water.
