AFTER two years of restrictions had curbed the ability to celebrate, Islanders were able to celebrate Liberation Day in style.

In warm sunshine, with temperatures approaching 20°C by the end of the morning, the Earl and Countess of Wessex joined an open-air service in Liberation Square.

The service marked 77 years since Jersey was freed from five years of German occupation, with many elements of the annual celebrations restored following the two-year interruption caused by the Covid pandemic.

A 21-gun salute from Fort Regent marked the proceedings, as well as the Liberation Prayer read by the Dean of Jersey, the Very Rev Mike Keirle, and the loyal response by Bailiff Timothy Le Cocq.

The day began with the traditional Liberation Day breakfast at St Helier Town Hall for those who had lived through the Occupation, while a party began at the Weighbridge at 12.30pm following the conclusion of the morning’s formalities.
