CONDOR Ferries has welcomed plans for a 150 million euros redevelopment of St Malo’s harbour terminal.

The terminal, along with several other port facilities, is owned by the Regional Council of Brittany, which confirmed the plans following a three-year consultation process.

The work is expected to take place between 2024 and 2026.

Described by local government officials as ‘ambitious’, the new plans include constructing a new passenger terminal and altering other aspects of the port to comply with post-Brexit safety regulations as well as making the Port of St Malo more environmentally-friendly.

With the UK now outside the EU, more extensive security checks are needed at the French border, so safety measures will be enhanced. This plan aims to move the terminal closer to St Malo’s town centre.

Reacting to the redevelopment plans, a Condor Ferries spokesperson said: ‘Condor is supportive of the plans to develop St Malo port and welcomes the investment commitment made by the region.

‘We have been engaging with the authorities for a period of time on the project, which includes our testing of the proposed new berthing arrangements for our high speed and freight vessels using the simulator in Nantes.

‘St Malo is an important gateway for the islands so this engagement is appreciated.’

The new plans include the demolition and reconstruction of Berth One to include a walkway for foot passengers as well as an access ramp for vehicles.

The port will also be expanded so it can welcome bigger ships.
