A WEEKEND-LONG celebration of the Island’s prehistoric era is due to be staged by Jersey Heritage later this month.

La Hougue Bie will host ‘Prehistory Weekend – Loving Your History’ from 30 April to 1 May to allow visitors to take in the sights, sounds and smells of life thousands of years ago.

Sponsored by Ogier, the two-day event will be led by ‘experimental archaeologist’ Dr James Dilley and AncientCraft’s Emma Jones. Together, they will host a full living history display in the newly-constructed Neolithic longhouse.

Children’s author Penny Byrne will also give a reading of her new book Charlie and Spud in the Stone Age to Springfield Primary School pupils. The book was written as part of the Island Identity Project.

Helen Otterwell, Jersey Heritage’s learning and engagement manager, said: ‘La Hougue Bie is the perfect setting to bring to life this special part of Jersey’s heritage, and we are excited to be able to share the living history demonstrations and James and Emma’s expertise with so many different parts of the community – helping to share and promote this significant time from Jersey’s past.’

Meanwhile, 23 April will see the return of Jersey Heritage’s monthly Meet the Collections series after a two-year hiatus.

The first ‘Meet the Collections’ event will take place at the Jersey Archive, and will run in partnership with the BBC as part of the Art That Made Us Festival.

Helena Kergozou, Jersey Heritage’s museum registrar, said: ‘Our Meet the Collections events will include pieces that have been carefully chosen by the collections team.

‘As we don’t usually have an opportunity to share these pieces with Islanders, Meet the Collections is a fantastic opportunity for people to come and see them up close and find out a little more about the stories behind them.’
