Extension rebellion: Association says planning decision is a ‘mockery’

St Brelade’s Bay

CAMPAIGNERS in St Brelade are calling for a decision to extend planning permission, originally granted for a seafront extension two and a half years ago, to be reviewed.

In 2019, the Planning Committee, following guidance from the Island Plan that was in place at the time, approved the extension for the property El Cobre, off the road which runs along St Brelade’s Bay, on condition that the work started before 16 October this year.

But last month the Planning Department agreed to extend the permission by a further three years in spite of the prospect of the Constable’s proposals for new restrictions on shoreline development, which States Members approved in last month’s Bridging Island Plan debate.

Members of the St Brelade’s Bay Association have written to Planning Committee chairman Constable Philip Le Sueur to ask for that decision to be reviewed because they say no reasons were given for seeking to extend the permit and that their objections, in the context of the proposed States policy change, were not properly considered.

Moz Scott, chair of the association, said the decision ignored elected States Members and was ‘a mockery of democratic processes’.

‘Well-reasoned and transparent decisions need to be demonstrably made if the public is to have trust in the Island’s planning process,’ she said.
