FIRST-AID competitions have returned for St John Ambulance members following a two-year absence caused by the pandemic.

Five badger and six cadet teams from across the Island recently competed for various trophies by undertaking tasks that assessed their knowledge and skills.

The badgers had to tackle a first-aid scenario in pairs and two sets of participants were chosen as joint winners: Helvetia badgers Marie-Claire Gueguen and Isabelle Dewhurst, and Mountbatten badgers Jean-Luc Riou and Olivia Wittmeyer.

The cadets had to address first-aid scenarios individually, followed by a team test involving two casualties. The winners of the solo first-aid scenario and team test were Helvetia cadets Nicole Gueguen and Chloe de Gouveia.

At the end of the competition, St John Ambulance chair David Le Quesne and Commandery President Alan Guy presented trophies to the winners in the presence of their parents. All participants were awarded a certificate.

Youth development officer for St John Ambulance Simon Blackmore said: ‘It was fantastic to see our young people competing again after an absence of two years. These competitions are a great way for them to demonstrate their knowledge of life-saving first-aid skills and being able to contact the emergency services.’
