Grouville parishioners overwhelmingly oppose Island Plan proposals

The Grouville Parish Assembly (32805453)

PARISHIONERS in Grouville have overwhelmingly objected to plans to rezone green fields as affordable housing sites,

An estimated 250 people attended a Parish Assembly – held in both the Parish Hall and Grouville Church – and considered proposals relating to the Bridging Island Plan.

A motion or ‘requête’ put forward by 15 parishioners and represented by Sir Philip Bailhache was discussed for more than an hour-and-a-half prior to a vote.

Constable John Le Maistre was requested, by virtually unanimous votes, to object to amendments to the plan from Deputies Steve Luce and Scott Wickenden to include several fields in the plan for affordable housing.

Mr Le Maistre was also asked to withdraw an amendment of his own regarding another field. This was a move which he had said in advance would lead him to ‘a weekend of soul-searching’ prior to next week’s States Assembly debate about the best option for his parish.

Parish Deputy Carolyn Labey won support from the meeting for her amendment to remove a field put forward by Environment Minister John Young.

The meeting also voted heavily in favour of asking Mr Le Maistre to convey the parish’s strong support for Deputy Labey’s amendment, and also to express their dissatisfaction about the shortage of time available for the plan to be considered.
