Constable condemns ‘tirades of verbal abuse’

Constable Mike Jackson

PARISHIONERS in St Brelade are being reminded to treat parish employees with respect after the Constable condemned an Islander who launched a ‘verbal assault’ against a member of staff.

Mike Jackson described the incident, which he said happened last week after the Islander ‘couldn’t have their way’, as ‘inexcusable’.

The parish has also issued a notice on its Twitter page, stating that such behaviour is ‘unacceptable’.

‘We will not tolerate swearing abuse, or verbal assaults on our hard-working staff. It is irrelevant how important, or special you may imagine yourself to be within the parish,’ the post read.

Speaking to the JEP, Mr Jackson said: ‘Given that we live in a regulated society and the parish as an authority has to apply those regulations, our staff on rare occasions find themselves subjected to tirades of verbal abuse simply in the course of doing their jobs. The parish hall staff are human beings like us all and don’t deserve the treatment some members of our society feel it is their right to dish out.

‘This applies to our staff at all levels and includes the parking control officers, who put up with an awful lot. One of our staff had to tolerate a verbal assault from a person as they couldn’t have their way and this is entirely unacceptable and inexcusable in this day and age.

‘It is me as Constable who is answerable in instances of dissatisfaction in any way.’
