A LONG-Covid clinic launched at the beginning of the month is receiving around ten to 15 new patients per week.
The specialist facility, which is being led by Dr Matt Doyle, was set up at the Hospital following a rise in the number of Islanders experiencing Covid symptoms more than four weeks after being infected.
It is estimated that there are between 300 and 400 cases of long Covid in Jersey, however Mr Doyle said the exact figure was ‘still a bit of an unknown quantity’.
‘I think it is reassuring [for Islanders] that we are looking at this in detail – being able to talk to people regarding what we know about the condition can help,’ he said.
He added that the clinic had been receiving ten to 15 referrals each week, ranging from patients who had experienced the condition for several weeks to those who had suffered from symptoms for over a year.
‘Because we have just started it is difficult to know how many people were waiting for the clinic to open, but we will take things as we go,’ he said.
Commenting on whether the service had managed to help patients recover, he added: ‘It is still early but we will start to see follow- up appointments, so it will be useful to see how they got on.’
He added long Covid seemed most likely to affect those aged from their mid-30s to late-60s.
