A BUSINESSMAN who was banned from the roads for drink-driving, and later injured himself in a ‘freak bike accident’, is to be given the chance to get his licence back early.

Lewis John Fellas (45) said that the accident had left him unable to walk or cycle and that he needed a car to get to work.

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu granted his application, but told Fellas that he would have to retake his driving test before he was able to get behind the wheel again.

Fellas, who received a driving ban last year, told the court: ‘During the summer my circumstances changed quite dramatically.

‘I had a freak bike accident and severed my Achilles tendon, and I was housebound for a couple of months. I lost contracts I was working on.

‘It will take nine months to recover fully. It’s been difficult to get from Jersey to London because there’s a one-mile walk through Heathrow Airport, and I can’t carry heavy loads without my car. I would very much like the return of my licence.’

Relief Magistrate David Le Cornu told him: ‘I am prepared to grant your application. But you remain disqualified from driving until you retake your test.’
