THE government’s common population policy has been backed by the States.

It aims to achieve a stable and sustainable population ‘for future generations’ and reduce reliance on net inward migration, setting out an initial ministerial vision for this.

Assistant Chief Minister Rowland Huelin, who lodged the policy in December, called population a ‘meaty problem’ during a debate in the Assembly yesterday.

‘There is no easy solution to managing Jersey’s population, but manage it we must,’ he said.

The policy requires future governments to include population policies in Government Plans from 2023.

States Members backed the proposition by 26 votes to 17, with Reform Jersey, the Progress Party and other backbenchers all rejecting the government’s proposal. There were no abstentions.
