A PLANNING application to build a passenger lift from Snow Hill to Fort Regent has been lodged by the Jersey Development Company.
If approved, the lift would form part of the wider redevelopment of the Fort, echoing the days when cable cars transported thousands of Islanders and tourists up the hilltop in the 1970s and 80s.
Earlier this week, the JEP revealed that Chief Minister John Le Fondré was expecting an application for the proposals to be lodged ‘imminently’.
Senator Le Fondré said: ‘I am very pleased that a solution has been found to create pedestrian access from Snow Hill to Fort Regent. This application is a major first step towards the government’s commitment to regenerate Fort Regent and I am looking forward to the wider regeneration plans being developed later this year, following the appointment of the master planning design team.’
St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft added: ‘This offers an exciting opportunity for town residents and workers to easily access Fort Regent.
‘The Fort is a valuable asset for St Helier and enhancements to the external landscaping will coincide with the delivery of the lift.’
The project will also include improvements to the public space in Hill Street and Snow Hill Car Park, to try to provide an enhanced experience for pedestrians and cyclists.
This includes improved street lighting, signage, street furniture, upgrades to the bus shelter and the relocation of the motorcycle parking to an undercover facility at Green Street Car Park.
