SUNSHINE and wind were in relatively short supply in Jersey for the first month of 2022, new figures from Jersey Met have revealed.

A total of just 59.1 hours of sunshine were recorded across January, representing under two hours of sun per day, compared with the 30-year average of 74 hours.

The dull conditions contrasted with the weather seen during the same month in 2021, which was ranked as Jersey’s fourth-sunniest on record and helped the Island retain the title of the sunniest place in the British Isles, with a total of 2,331 hours of sunshine.

Jersey Met also said that the mean wind speed at the Airport during January had been the fourth-lowest on record, with the final three weeks of the month having been particularly calm. A total 78.9 millimetres of rain fell throughout the month, compared with the 30-year average of 95.2mm, while the average temperature of 7.3°C was 0.3°C above average.

The forecast is for varied weather this week. Today was due to bring the warmest conditions of the next five days, with the mercury predicted to fall to between 4˚C and 8˚C by Friday. Misty drizzle is expected tomorrow, followed by rain on Thursday. Wednesday and Friday are due to bring cloud and some sun, with the wind hovering between force three and four from Tuesday.
