STUDENTS at Les Quennevais School were wished good luck by a famous composer this week as they prepared to rock out on stage for the first time in over two years.

Pupils were given a motivational boost by Andrew Lloyd Webber ahead of performing his School of Rock musical to a sold out auditorium four nights in a row.

Mr Webber, who composed the show’s score, tweeted: ‘With all the best wishes for an enjoyable and successful run. We hope it all goes well.’

And Islanders could have been forgiven for thinking a UFO had landed as spotlights beamed into the sky out west.

But those who took to social media to ask about these strange lights need not have worried, as it was the performers welcoming parents and visitors to their first musical production in the new school building.

Head teacher Sarah Hague said: ‘It was astonishing to have live performances back in school. It means so much to the students and it helps them develop confidence and explore their passion.

‘Everyone has been amazing, from the students to the teachers and everyone who helped to set up the performance. Our head of drama, Sarah Milman, has had to overcome so many challenges to get this show going but it is great that we have been able to deliver something special to parents and other members of the community who have been very supportive of the show.’

The students were due to perform again tonight and tomorrow evening and Mrs Hague said the opportunity to use the stage in the new school building has been ‘exciting’.

‘We have loved using the Opera House and we have been so lucky to have it. But having our own technical facilities on site has allowed us to put on an entertaining show and it just highlights how amazing this new school building is.’

Commenting on the message from Andrew Lloyd Webber, she added: ‘I tweeted him and he came back with the good-luck message. He is a massive advocate for grassroots performances and it was amazing to know our students had his support.’
