A HOTEL in St Brelade has become the first in Jersey to gain accreditation as a living-wage employer.
The Atlantic Hotel joins more than 20 other Island organisations to gain recognition for the level at which it pays its employees.
The living wage, which rose to £11.27 per hour this month, just over £2 above the legal minimum wage, takes into account the cost of living, taxes and the value of benefits available to working people on low incomes. It is defined as a level of income that allows individuals or families to afford adequate shelter, food, and other necessities within their communities.
Jersey’s Living Wage Campaign team leader Jennifer Bridge said: ‘We hope that The Atlantic Hotel’s accreditation will encourage other hotels to explore paying the living wage too, and encourage employers to contact us and start a conversation which will hopefully lead to accreditation.’
Patrick Burke, the hotel’s owner and managing director, said: ‘As a small, family-run hotel we pride ourselves on the highest levels of personal service provided by our dedicated and talented team.
‘It’s important to us that our staff not only enjoy their work but that a long-term career in hospitality is an attractive and competitive option for them, ensuring they enjoy life in Jersey while also making a significant contribution to the economy and helping to develop a thriving hospitality industry.’
Employers which have previously gained living-wage accreditation include the Government of Jersey and organisations in a range of fields including finance, education and hospitality.
