Constable confirms he will not seek re-election

St Ouen Constable Richard Buchanan was elected unopposed in 2018. He has announced that he will not be standing in this year?s general election

AN Assistant Chief Minister has announced that he will not be standing in the upcoming general election.

Constable Richard Buchanan said it had been ‘an honour’ to serve St Ouen during his one term representing the parish.

Mr Buchanan is also an assistant minister in the External Relations and Financial Services Department, and a member of the States Employment Board, Democratic Accountability and Governance sub-committee and the Diversity Forum.

He was first elected in 2018, and recently became a member of the newly formed Jersey Alliance party, which counts a number of current ministers among its ranks.

Mr Buchanan spent 40 years in the finance industry before becoming a States Member, and often refers to the outlook of the private sector in the speeches he gives during sittings. He was elected unopposed and took over from previous St Ouen Constable Michael Paddock.

A motorsport enthusiast, Mr Buchanan is a member and former president of the Jersey Motor Cycle and Light Car Club, which organises the annual Jersey Rally.

In a statement announcing his decision, Mr Buchanan said that ‘potential candidates will currently be considering their options’.

He added: ‘With this in mind I felt it only fair that I clarify my intentions.’

Mr Buchanan went on to say: ‘It has been an honour to serve the parish and Island for the last four years and I wish whoever is elected as my successor well.’

Grouville Constable John Le Maistre and St Saviour Constable Sadie Le Sueur-Rennard have both also confirmed that they will not be seeking re-election in June.
