Abuse memorial plan still on hold

Following publication of the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry’s report in 2017, a Citizens’ Panel made up of abuse survivors and members of the wider public proposed a Legacy Project that included proposals for a memorial to victims.

Initially, £200,000 was set aside for the project and the Weighbridge was proposed as a potential site.

However, the scheme faced a significant backlash, with some arguing it would act as a traumatic reminder for survivors. A protest – led by paedophile-hunter Cheyenne O’Connor – was held in October at the Weighbridge. A decision was taken to pause the project shortly thereafter.

A government spokesperson said: ‘The Citizens’ Panel, which was set up by the Council of Ministers following the Independent Jersey Care Inquiry, continues to discuss the sensitive issue of the Legacy Project. An update on the four main areas of the Legacy Project will be announced in due course.’

‘The panel, which is independent with no political involvement, will report updates to the Chief Minister and Assistant Children’s and Education Ministers.’

Meanwhile, Ms O’Connor said she was continuing to speak to survivors and work with representatives of the panel but that there was ‘no rush’ to continue with the project.
