Online prayer event for fall construction worker

Last week Filipe Abreu (36) fell several storeys from a residential development in Ann Street.

Emergency services were called to the incident at 1.38pm on Tuesday 2 February. He was flown to Southampton the day after the accident and remains in a critical condition.

Samantha Walton, a family friend, said Mr Abreu was ‘fighting for his life’, with his wife and family by his side. Mr Abreu, who has lived in Jersey for six years, has two children.

Mrs Walton said: ‘The day after the accident Filipe was flown to Southampton where he remains in a critical state. On Thursday the family received the worst news possible – Filipe was on the verge of not pulling through.

‘The family rushed to Southampton so they could be by his side however Filipe is a fighter, he hasn’t given up and is still fighting for is life. The extent of his injuries are still unknown at this stage.

‘The family wish to hold this event to pray that Filipe has the strength to continue fighting and come home.’

Mrs Walton added that they were now hoping to hold a small event at St Thomas’ Church on Sunday at 7pm which, if it goes ahead, is likely to be streamed over Facebook.

‘We will all light a candle for Filipe and say a prayer on his behalf. We hope everyone will be able to join us online, where we can come together as an island to show our support to the family during this hard time,’ she said.

Meanwhile, a crowdfunding page which was set up by Richard Long, who has no connection to the family, has raised over £6,000 for Mr Abreu – more than six times its original £1,000 target.
