The yellow alert issued this morning has been replaced by an orange warning – the second-highest level.
The warning, issued by Jersey Met, says: ‘A band of snow will affect the Island from late afternoon, lasting until the early hours of Wednesday.
‘Accumulations of up to 2cm are likely but may reach about 5cm, with strong winds possibly leading to some drifting at times.
‘The temperature is expected to remain at or below freezing during this period.’
It is expected to remain cold, with maximum temperatures of between 2°C and 5°C this week, and further wintry showers are likely on Friday.
Temperatures are due to rise slightly over the weekend.
The UK Met Office, which issues long-range forecasts on its website, says the cold weather is likely to last until later in the month.
For the period covering Saturday to 22 February, it states: ‘It will remain cold or very cold with brisk winds during the start of this period but potentially turning milder over southwestern then western areas for a time, but with a risk of gales at times here.
‘Outbreaks of rain and snow, potentially heavy for some southwestern areas, are possible… whilst mostly dry and bright in the east and north.
‘However with a continued risk of snow showers possible in central and northern areas.
‘Further into this period, snow and attendant wintry hazards are likely to continue which could affect mainly northern areas and eastern areas but not confined to. Overall, conditions look to remain cold but some milder interludes are possible with accompanied unsettled conditions moving in from the west or the southwest.’
