The St Brelade Character Study Report reveals Islanders’ responses to a three-week survey which took place in September.

Those taking part were invited to answer three questions, namely what they love about St Brelade’s Bay, how they think the bay has changed over the past decade and what they think could be done to improve the area in future.

More than half of the 499 respondents said they appreciated the beach’s natural beauty, walking along the beach and promenade, swimming and watersports. A total of 71% of respondents said that developments in the bay were unsympathetic to existing architecture and landscape.

The report, which cost £20,000, was produced by the Strategic Policy, Performance and Population Department. It is hoped that the results of the survey will help shape the Bridging Island Plan, which will set out local planning policy for 2022 to 2024 until a longer-term plan can be produced.

Assistant Environment Minister Gregory Guida said: ‘This phase of public engagement is a very important piece of work and I am pleased so many people took the time to give their very passionate views on what is a very special part of our Island.

‘All views will be taken into account as we develop future planning policies for the area in the new Island Plan.’
