Running from Longbeach car park up towards Grouville School, the track has already had thousands of pounds spent on it over the years.
But Infrastructure Department staff are now replacing the top surface with brown asphalt. According to a government spokesperson the current surface had proved ‘difficult to maintain’ and resulted in grit being thrown
into the ‘working parts’ of bicycles.
‘These works are being done in response to complaints from members of the public, who have found that the surface is prone to potholes, creates a difficult ride for cyclists, and is unsuitable for people in wheelchairs,’ said the spokesperson.
‘This time of year has been chosen for the works because the department has the staff and resources to undertake the work.’
The project, which is expected to cost £220,000, is anticipated to last for five weeks, proceeding from the junction north of Grouville garage towards Longbeach car park. Following that, the section between Grouville garage and La Rue Vardon will be resurfaced.
Grouville Constable John Le Maistre said: ‘I hope it encourages more people to use it, not just cyclists but pedestrians and people going to school.’
