Jet landed without permission

The Austrian-registered Cessna 510 Citation Mustang, which had four passengers on board, committed the error shortly after the Airport opened at 6am on 5 August.

Outlining the incident in its report, the Air Accidents Investigation Branch said that as the aircraft made its way towards the Airport the pilots were told by approach controllers that they would be the first to land, and were advised to contact the tower controllers to be given permission to land.

The crew then completed their landing checklist, turned on their landing lights and landed. After making their way off the runway, the pilots were informed that they had failed to contact tower controllers and had not been given clearance to land.

According to the AAIB report, the crew told investigators that they misinterpreted being told they would be the first to land as being given clearance to land.

It added: ‘There was no other traffic in the vicinity at the time and the tower controller was aware of their presence and expecting them.

‘The commander [44-years-old] commented that the crew were not fatigued, distracted or overloaded yet misinterpreted the instructions they received. He emphasised the importance of checking if there is any doubt as to the clearance received.’

It added that the investigation had been opened after an accident report form was submitted by the pilot.
