Income tax deadline next week

Revenue Jersey has received 12,500 online returns and 52,000 tax returns in total so far, with 15,000 returns still outstanding. There are around 4,000 taxpayers who file late every year, and about 2,000 customers whose tax agents file for them.

Customer and Local Services are preparing for at least 5,000 OneGov accounts to be activated in the next seven working days, which requires a smartphone and valid passport to set up.

Comptroller of Revenue Richard Summersgill, said: ‘Any Islanders who still have outstanding tax returns will need to allow enough time to set up a OneGov account, and a digital ID, including allowing enough time for any data verification to take place.

‘There is a step-by-step guidance on the activation process, and I’d urge Islanders to make use of all the resources available online to avoid a late-filing penalty.’

Taxpayers who have missed the paper return filing date, but who do not have a smartphone and passport to file online, should submit their return on paper as soon as possible but will be liable to a late-filing penalty.

Customers can appeal against the penalty, by including a letter with their paper return outlining the grave or exceptional circumstances leading to them filing late. Appeals will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
