More than 90 homes to be built on Randalls’ old site

The development, which was approved unanimously by the Planning Committee on Friday, will include 31 one-bedroom and 60 two-bedroom residential units.

In addition, the former offices at Clare House will be turned into five residential units and the surrounding site will see improvements including the creation of two new retail units. Parking for residents will also be included in the development.

Although the development will mean the demolition of a number of listed cottages, the Island’s need for new homes as well as the current economic climate played a key role in the committee’s decision-making process.

St Lawrence Deputy Kirsten Morel, a member of the Planning Committee, said during the public meeting: ‘I cannot get beyond the fact that Jersey does need housing quite desperately. We will, with the economic environment moving forward, need projects of this sort of scale to provide economic stimulus and work.’

Fellow committee member St Peter Deputy Rowland Huelin added: ‘This is one of the easiest decisions I’ve had to take with such a large-scale project, due to the overwhelming public benefits if this development goes ahead.’

Randalls, which submitted the planning application, is looking to relocate to a new warehousing and distribution centre.

The Clare Street Brewery started out as the New Market Brewery and dates from the early 1800s. The brewery’s operations were combined with the Minden Place Brewery, starting in 1819. The Randall family connection began during this era, and brewing continued at Clare Street until 1992.
