Jersey couple’s horse app becomes the mane event

Equestrian enthusiasts Andrew Amy and his partner Brooke Allan, who are both from the Island, launched their ‘Whickr’ app two years ago and it now has more than 12,000 users.

The app acts as an online marketplace and communication platform for people who wish to buy, browse and sell horses.

Mr Amy, a former investment manager who now lives in Wales, said that he is now looking to push his product further afield in markets such as the US, Europe and Australia, after its success in the UK.

‘We launched Whickr in June 2018 while still working as an investment manager,’ he said.

‘It was always my intention to exit my job and do Whickr fulltime and then it just snowballed after it launched in November.

‘We have sold 500 horse through it and have 1,500 adverts on the app at the moment. We have more than 12,000 users and that’s growing.

‘We are the number one app in the UK for buying and selling horses and have also featured in the top 100 appstore apps in the sports category. So it’s really growing in popularity.’

He added that one of the key selling points of the app was the ease with which users can buy and sell horses and communicate with each other.

‘The app is a platform for people to buy and sell horses and browse horses and speak to each other from the comfort of their home,’ he said.

‘It integrates all the benefits from existing websites, social media and messaging platforms and brings them together.

‘If, for example, you were to go on to a website and find a horse you would like, you would have to contact the buyer via email and it’s very clunky.

‘Or you might have to look at photos on another platform. What we are trying to do is remove the need to go to multiple areas as part of the process and have it all in one place.’

He added that his company was considering developing the app further into a social media platform for members of the equestrian community.

More details about the app can be found at whickr.com.
