‘Some issues’ but reports of anti-social behaviour in Jersey dropped this weekend, say police

Extra patrols were carried out in areas including the Waterfront, Havre des Pas and parts of St Brelade, following a rise in littering and people refusing to obey social-distancing rules during the past few weeks.

The force also warned that during the crackdown, named Operation Rockpool, officers would take a tougher stance on people breaking distancing regulations.

Under new laws passed in the States last week, people who refuse to keep two metres away from anyone who is not from their household can be fined up to £1,000.

In a Facebook post on Sunday, the States police said: ‘Lots of people out enjoying themselves, but thankfully in a much more responsible way than we had been seeing – less littering, less anti-social behaviour, more responsive to police requests.

‘Still some issues, but we’re doing our best to nip things in the bud.

‘We’re keeping the high-visibility patrols going and thank you for your continued support.’

Complaints about anti-social behaviour have steadily increased since the lockdown was eased. Two weeks ago part of the Waterfront had to be closed after a group of up to 100 young people left the area strewn with litter, with many refusing to obey social-distancing rules.
