Teacher in court after being charged with possessing indecent images of children

James John Matthews (41), from St John’s School, was charged on Monday evening and appeared yesterday in the Magistrate’s Court via video link because of the Covid-19 outbreak.

Crown Advocate Chris Baglin, prosecuting, told the court that Mr Matthews was alleged to have possessed 33 indecent images of children on or before 19 December last year on an Apple iMac.

Assistant Magistrate Peter Harris declined jurisdiction and remanded Mr Matthews into custody. He had previously been on bail.

The teacher is due to appear again on 25 June, when the case will be committed to the Royal Court.

In a statement earlier this week, the States police said that there was ‘no evidence’ that any of the alleged offences involved Jersey children.

A spokesperson for Children, Young People, Education and Skills said earlier this week that the department was unable at this stage to comment any more about the case or Mr Matthew’s employment.
