Vaccinations: Parents urged to keep up to date

Jersey’s Health Department, which prides itself on the high take-up rates for immunisation against pneumococcal and meningococcal infections, whooping cough, diphtheria and measles, has reported a ‘small drop’ in the proportions being vaccinated in recent weeks.

Dr Adrian Noon, medical director for primary care, said it was important that Islanders were aware that the essential childhood immunisation programme was continuing.

‘Jersey is very proud to have one of the highest childhood immunisation rates across Europe, and while we have seen a small drop in this since the Covid-19 pandemic started, GPs are still carrying out our programme, and it is very important for children to receive their vaccinations at the right time,’ he said.

‘While we appreciate that some parents may have concerns about taking children for their vaccinations, surgeries have put in place procedures to ensure that vaccinations can be carried out safely. If parents continue to have any concerns they should speak to their GP.’

Islanders are recommended not to delay their appointments unless they are displaying symptoms of Covid-19 or are currently in isolation.

Anyone who is unsure about which vaccinations are outstanding should contact the immunisation nurse specialist on 445790, or their GP. Parents and carers have also been reminded that healthcare for children is still available as usual, even while lockdown measures are in place.

The fall in take-up rates mirrors the situation in Guernsey, where medical officer of health Nicola Brink also reported a drop last week.

Dr Brink said: ‘What we do not want to be doing is battling another infectious disease at the same time as battling Covid-19.’
