It’s a girl… but what will we call her?

The baby was born to mother Bahasha in December and an update has been given by senior mammal keeper Mark Beresford, who said a vote has been launched on the Zoo’s website to come up with a name.

He said: ‘We are delighted to announce it is in fact a girl. It has taken a long time to get to this point, it is difficult to be really certain with baby gorillas and difficult to tell the sex at a young age.

‘Becoming a mum Bahasha has been absolutely incredible. She has really taken to it how we wanted. She is really attentive, protective and feeds her all the time.

‘The baby has developed really well. She is starting to venture off and crawl and is not being held the whole time.

‘The next question is what is the baby’s name, and that is where you guys can get involved.’

On the Zoo’s website there is a selection of four names for people to vote for.

The options for the name are Kapuki which means first-born daughter, Amari which means strength, Iniko which means born during troubled times and Muhuri which means stamp because the mother’s name, Bahasha, means envelope.

An announcement is due to be made on 5 May. The website address is: durrell.org/wildlife/visit.
