Public urged not to call police about coronavirus lockdown breaches

The force said it is dealing with a ‘high number of calls’ about alleged breaches which is reducing call handler’s ability to deal with reports of crime and other incidents.

A spokesperson urged the public to instead call the government helpline on 445566 or email notisolating@gov.je

They said: ‘Please do not call us if you have concerns that an individual or business has breached the regulations.

‘Call the helpline on 445566 for queries or make reports to notisolating@gov.je including some key info in your email: What happened? Why you think there is a breach? When and where? Who is involved? And your contact details.

‘Only contact police regarding COVID-19 emergencies, if you see a large gathering happening at the time or for targeted or intentional spreading of the virus, or where a life is in immediate danger.

‘Rest assured, we are on patrol day and night, dealing with these issues through early intervention.’

The force had recently suggested that breaches should be reported using the non-emergency 612612 number. A spokesman said that is not the case and the advice above should be followed.

To date, four people have been fined for remaining in a public place without reasonable excuse under the new emergency Covid-19 laws.
